Conclusion

Both Niva Bupa and Care Health Insurance are Ditto's partner insurers, with strong product portfolios that cater to different needs.

Care Health stands out for its higher claim settlement ratio, wider hospital network, and flexible add-ons. Its Care Supreme plan ranks second in Ditto's top 5 health insurance plans.

Niva Bupa also has a plan in the top 5, with ReAssure 2.0 Platinum+ ranking fourth. Beyond that, ReAssure 3.0 can cover many health conditions that other insurers decline, on condition-specific terms, and Aspire offers maternity benefits with newborn cover from day 1. Niva Bupa's complaints have also fallen to an all-time low, now below Care's.

Our Recommendation?

Evaluate both insurers on company metrics, plan features, pricing, and your personal health profile. If a higher claim settlement ratio and a wider network are your priority, Care Health is the stronger pick. If you have a health condition other insurers may decline, or you're planning a family, Niva Bupa is the better option.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which is better, Niva Bupa or Care Health Insurance?

It depends on your priorities. Care Health has a higher claim settlement ratio (95.45% vs. 92.92%) and a wider network of 11,400+ hospitals, while Niva Bupa receives fewer complaints (37.13 vs. 42.67 per 10,000 claims). Care Supreme doesn't charge a loading for pre-existing conditions, while Niva Bupa offers Booster+ growth, newborn cover on Aspire, and flexible underwriting on ReAssure 3.0. Both rank in Ditto's top 5, with Care Supreme at second and ReAssure 2.0 Platinum+ at fourth.

Which is better if I have a pre-existing condition like diabetes?

Both insurers offer useful options. Care Supreme doesn't charge a loading on your premium for pre-existing conditions, and its Instant Cover option waives the waiting period for diabetes, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, and asthma, with cover from day 31. Niva Bupa ReAssure 3.0 can issue cover for many health conditions that other insurers decline, using condition-specific terms such as an exclusion, co-pay, or sub-limit. It also offers day-1 cover for declared conditions if you pay an extra premium, subject to acceptance. If your condition is harder to insure, ReAssure 3.0 is worth checking first.

Which is better for senior citizens, Niva Bupa or Care Health?

Both insurers cover senior citizens. Care Supreme has no upper entry age, and Care also offers condition-specific plans like Care Heart. Niva Bupa ReAssure 3.0 accepts adults up to 99 years at entry and can issue cover for many conditions on condition-specific terms, which helps older buyers with existing health issues. Care's higher claim settlement ratio, no loading charges, and wider network are advantages for older policyholders. Niva Bupa's lower complaint volume may mean a smoother service experience.

Which is better for maternity, Niva Bupa or Care Health?

Niva Bupa is the better choice for maternity, mainly through its Aspire plan. Aspire's Platinum+ and Titanium+ variants have a maternity waiting period of just 9 months, and newborns are covered from day 1 under the policy. Care Supreme, Care's top-ranked plan, focuses on hospitalization cover and doesn't include maternity benefits in its base plan. If you're planning a family, Aspire Titanium+ is the variant Ditto recommends, since a maternity claim doesn't end its age lock.

How does Niva Bupa's Lock the Clock work, and what are its limits?

Lock the Clock is available on Niva Bupa ReAssure 2.0 Platinum+ and Titanium+. It charges your premium based on the age at which you joined until a claim is paid. After that, premiums follow your current age at renewal. Its main limit is that it locks your age, not your price. Niva Bupa can still raise premiums for all policyholders through company-wide repricing, so treat it as a bonus rather than a reason to buy.

Are consumables covered by Niva Bupa and Care Health?

Not in the base plans of either insurer, but both offer add-ons. Care Supreme's Claim Shield covers 68 listed non-payable items, such as gloves and masks, and a broader Claim Shield+ is available under Care's separate Care Advanced add-on policy. Niva Bupa ReAssure 2.0 covers these items through its Safeguard and Safeguard+ add-ons. At Ditto, we usually recommend adding consumables cover, since these items can otherwise become an out-of-pocket expense.

Do Niva Bupa and Care Health cover daycare treatments?

Yes. Both Niva Bupa ReAssure 2.0 and Care Supreme cover daycare treatments up to the sum insured. These are procedures that need less than 24 hours of hospitalization because of advances in medical technology, such as cataract surgery, dialysis, and chemotherapy. Since both plans offer similar daycare cover, it's unlikely to be the deciding factor between them.

Can I port my policy from Niva Bupa to Care Health, or the other way around?

Yes. Under IRDAI's portability rules, you can move between Niva Bupa and Care Health and carry over credits for waiting periods already served and the moratorium period. For example, if you've completed 2 years of your pre-existing disease waiting period, you'll only need to serve the remaining year with the new insurer. Apply at least 30 days, but not earlier than 60 days, before your renewal date. The new insurer will review your application before accepting it.
